The first lecture was INTRODUCTION TO VOCAB
I thought the lecture's gona be interesting cos i have particular interest in learning and finding about new words although i keep on learning daily new " cool " slangs.. from here and there which are completely useless.
The professor looked very casual.. and in for an interaction session rather than a lecture.
Stupid nerdy questions started coming...
what newspapers to read?
what books to read?
how many books to read?
what should be the approach?( this was the nerd in me speaking)
to all the questions he answered this " dont ask me difficult questions"
The conversation went on and on... about different things..
he blasted SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE saying that it is nothing but commercialized entertainment to earn money and it doesnt showcase any of the true problems Mumbai is facing... his point was we will appreciate what this guy has projected about Mumbai only because it is winning academy awards but how many of the youngsters would actually even sit through a prithviraj chahuan or a satyajit ray movie which is another level to which movies like slumdog can never reach.
He said PAULO COELHO and ROBIN SHARMA( author of MONK WHO SOLD HIS FERRARI) are not great writers cos they just hype and present the edited version of authenticity.Because none of the youngsters would make an attempt to find out the authentic version and where actually did all this originate from.
he also said Fiction except for getting you in the reading habit is of no use.
and the youngsters welcome such mediocre stuff cos there is immense pleasure in MEDIOCRITY...
he feels a person who is boring has to be intelligent... cos a person who's intelligent would'nt read write or see mediocre average stuff what more than half the world does.
But a person who's intelligent would have the passion for a quest for knowledge and pure unaldulterated literature cinema which are infact boring.
He gave us an advice on stop having "romantic ideas" about yourself and about your life and kept repeating it again and again.
Be realistic and practical and do before you preach.
When someone asked Him what to read?... he gave in a smirk and with the grin still on his face he answered "asking me what to read is same as asking me, sir who should i marry"
because whatever i tell you right now you'll find it boring...just like if i tell u to marry anyone
you wont agree...
but wen u're in love wid someone .. even if i give u a thousand options to marrying someone else you wont give in..
( i loved his point over here)
To do something you really need to have dat passion, da drive, da enthusiasm and da love for doing it.
And that is not achieved by giving in to mediocrity but by quest for something concrete.
He went on to ask us about do we love what we are doing.
Since it was an engineering batch nobody raised their hands.
Then he asked if anyone liked any particular subject in engineering.. and again i cudn't see any hands up.
It was surprising.. we all are putting in 4 years of life doing what we dont enjoy just to get the degree which says B.E in computer engineering.
Then again he chipped in saying because you guys have taken the " tried tested and beaten path"
There should be a voice inside you which says this is what i like and i am going to excel in that no matter what.
That is what passion is all about.. that is when excellency takes over mediocrity and thats what youth is all about not just hormonal passion but a mental passion.
One more brilliant thing that he came up and which was actually really disturbing was when he asked us to name few people who you think are great legends the world has ever seen.
Mahatma Gandhi
Einstein
Newton
Nelson Mandela
Dhirubhai Ambani
Mother Teresa
The names kept coming in and there were close to 20 names on the board.
Then he asked now tell me one thing common in all these personalities.
The answer was " they all are dead"
I was like... **ck actually..!!
His point was is it just that some men do some great work and once they are dead somebody hypes them up and we blindly follow?
Why isnt a single person alive who can be on this board right now or are we too blind to find them amongst us and are we waiting for the person to die or someone else to recognize a legend between us.??
y cant there be a BARACK OBAMA more often.
Disturbing isnt it?
he gave some reasoning as to why CAT is not tough to crack just as how the other classes do to motivate their students.
But the lecture was thought provoking none the less..!
Lets where we all go...!!
( Sorry for such long posts i know there's no time to read such huge things but cant help it..i'll try to be precise from now on.. hehe)

i assure u tht until n unless these things are interesting doesnt matter wat the length is n dude...we can hav a fight on this topic now...
lets go a few weeks back i told u the same thing...tht it isnt worth doin wat u dont like...becoz it is again the been there done tht path..laid down by someone else...
" tried tested and beaten path" i quote u here..
but again...wat he said..abt tht...dead ppl thing..was amazing..he made one huge point there...
i'll wait for ur reply...if tht professor has changed ur thought process or u still believe wat u told me..tht day...outside SUDAMA>..
man i miss the pav bhaji btw...i knw goin offtrack but still
Well .... its kind of debatable.
If danny boyle would have mad a dark, no entertainment movie i am sure nobody would have seen. He wanted to attarct a large audiences so he made the movie in that way. not everybody want to deal with serious issues seriously. Sometimes you have to explain things to people in a different way.
If you dont want a kid to eat chocolate coz it might spoil his teeth he wont understand, or wont want to understand. If you tell him if you eat chocolate a monster will take away your teeth he might get frightened
the very reason why people dont watch movies like water and fire and salaam bombay.
and even before dhirubai ambani died he was a legend
mahatma gandhi\(though i dont like his ideologies) was a legend even then. people went crazy behind him calling him bapu
similarly mother terresa, nelson mandela... etc they were all living legends.
yes i would agree for eintstien and newton because that was the revolution era and new ideologies werent accepted open mindedly. but thats how slowly people became open to new ideas.
About barack obama ...he thinks people dont take him as a legend??
he should get his facts right.
i am sure amongst indians only ... take the youth of metro cities, ask them about their local leader they wont know, ask them about their president some would still answer apj abdul kalam.
but they know everything about barr
ack obama.
funny and sad
hi...
read ur blog fr the first time...
good stuff! lookin forward to future write ups... n yeah length is no big deal. take care!
@vikram - sometimes tried tested and beaten path is all you can do.. and m tellin u besides half the time we as youngsters have romantic ideas about ourselves and our dreams..and we dont actually kno what we rilly want so you can just help but play safe..
wen u have enough of da green stuff den try experimenting with what u rilly like..!!.. first have to be in dat position..so da prof dint change my view one bit..
@ vaidehi - that is what he's trying to say na duh..
y cant der be a barack obama more often.. cos all other legends like winston churchill.. martin luther washington..and da ones dat i've mentioned have died 15-50 years back..
and i feel barack obama has just emerged after sucha long time..!!
nobody knew him before ryt...!!and infact nobody wud have known him further if he wud've lost the elections..so what he was trying to say is that world is so full of mediocre people with the same rat race joining one by one dat there is no one credible enough??.. or is it dat we just dun have da foresight and da eye to find them and recognize them that we are so busy wid ourselves..well slumdog issue.. m exhausted of it.. so lets leave it der..
@ shivam - thanks man.. rilly appreciate the nice words.. keep visiting.!!
where did you go.. the guy seems interesting... hugely stupid and critical.. and pessimist.. but nevertheless interesting...
ok...
barrack obama...i dont knw y there is so much hype abt this president...seriously...is it becoz hes black n he made it to the white house..or r there n e other grt achievements tht he has under his belt tht i m not aware of...
all i knw tht this guy...is young was a senator of chicago...n has a harvard degree....wat else has he done...
its js been 10 days hes reached the white house...n if he wants to be a legend...he really has to prove himself in the coming 4 yrs..
n seriously wat has he done...tht we need him so badly...i mean...gimme one geniune reason...
i seriously think tht this again is one grt example of mediocrity...someone says tht he is grt..so he is grt...
isnt it..?
Hey! I really like this post, your lecturer seems fun.. we could use someone like that in BMM :P
I agree with the part about Slumdog Millionaire, I think it's exaggerated and hyped. But about the "edited version of authenticity" .. all writers have to do that. They have to exaggerate at some point because it's fiction, the book can't just be a statement of facts you know?
And don't worry about long posts, they're still fun to read :P
@ rishi -i have taken parag chitale for classes
@vikram - if you find out at the grass root level der is something special about obama than more than being just black...the way he's won his elections is commendable..!!.. with no funds.. and oder stories..!! dunno more abt him as u said.. will have to see..!!
@ esha - thanks a lot dear!..rilly appreciate!..
n yea he even trashed out da non fiction novels..still dint get what exactly he was conveying..
r u kiddin me...the guy dint get n e funds...dude
his election campaign was the most expensive election campaign in the history of america...
the official cost of the campaign was $670.7 million....tht is approx more than 3500crores..
did u even knw tht...lol..
dude ppl here are sayin tht altho he is serving the office for 4 yrs..it'll will easily take him more than tht time js to repay the bureacrates...tht hav helped him to win the elections...js imagine..how much he is gonna favor them...a lot...if u look at it....the bureacracy in america..mite js increase....to an unimaginable extent...
u knw how many ppl cud hav benefitted frm tht kind of money...america cud hav used tht to pay off some of its loans...
dude i m tellin u there is nothin so special abt him tht he can b called a legend...
the fact tht he is the first african man to be the president of US...n i guess thts the only highlight in his resume...
agreed tht he has made some huge promises in his campaign...but if u see the past everyone...makes those promises....
legends are who deliver...
again ... one grt example..of hype...ppl dont knw n e thing abt him....but they've already made him a legend...
duh...!!..wen he started his political career he had no funds..dat was i was tryin to say..
and he managed to woo all the beaurecrats itself is a big achievement..!!
and its been 10 days.. der have already been two stimulus package..in billions for the US economy plus an outright pressure on pak.. i guess.. a change has come for good after BUSH..
ab mujhe jyaada nahi pata so paka mat...bloody yankee!! :p :p
post a new post...u lost this one...
lol.. i aint posting to debate and have arguments..!!
"That is what passion is all about.. that is when excellency takes over mediocrity"...
very nicely said. I have similar views. 'Mediocre' is not what we want our lives to be. Too good.
